Medical Laboratory Technology

ABOUT THE STUDY

Technological progress is an impetus for study programs that are part of academics, especially D3 Medical Laboratory technology in providing education to be able to meet regional needs, especially in terms of public health. This encourages the implementation of development in the field of health personnel resources, which are multi-disciplinary, cross-program and cross-sectoral involving professional organizations and the community.

Along with technological advances in all aspects of people’s lives, this condition has changed people’s perspective on various aspects, including the health services they receive. In addition, the era of globalization or free trade has brought changes to all aspects of life, including the demands for health needs. With Indonesia’s participation as a member of the AFTA (ASEAN Free Trade Association) which has been in effect since 2010 and NAFTA (North Atlantic Free Trade Association) which is effective no later than 2020, it is required that health workers have adequate knowledge, skills and attitudes and continue to improve their quality so that able to compete and equal with health workers from abroad.

The demand for increasing knowledge, skills and attitudes of health workers is no exception also addressed to health workers in the field of laboratory services. Medical Laboratory Technologists as individuals who work in laboratory services must always develop themselves in responding to community needs for quality assurance of laboratory test results, and demands for excellent service. This is because medical laboratory services are an inseparable part of health services to the community. . The medical laboratory as one of the health service units is expected to provide thorough and accurate information about the laboratory aspects of the specimens/samples that are tested in the laboratory.

Medical Laboratory Technology Experts conduct laboratory testing using knowledge and methods from biomedical disciplines to assist and or establish disease diagnosis, treatment monitoring and disease prevention in humans. The main task of a Medical Laboratory Technologist is to carry out medical laboratory services, which include collection and analysis of biological specimens, verifying laboratory examination results, promoting medical laboratory services and being able to assist in medical laboratory research including hematology, clinical chemistry, immuno-serology. , bacteriology, virology, parasitology, mycology, clinical toxicology, and anatomical pathology and molecular biology, especially molecular analysis techniques.

One of the efforts that can be made to answer the challenges mentioned above is to change and improve the education system for Medical Laboratory Technologists. Starting with a change in curriculum orientation based on the Indonesian National Work Qualifications and in accordance with the vision and mission of the D3 Medical Laboratory Technology study program, improving methods, also referring to the needs of laboratory service users who can compete and penetrate the global job market.
